News from BSAC: Boards & Brushes – A Custom Wood Sign Painting Workshop

In November, at Burbank Senior Artists Colony in Burbank, CA, Program Director Megan showed resident crafters, experienced and new, how to create custom holiday and home wooden signs. Residents were given custom stencils the students designed themselves, then they were able to customize the sign with paint choices and technique. The students loved how, although they had chosen similar stencils, their signs looked so different with the application of a little creativity.

It is always well attended, as the instructor is keen to challenge the students to express themselves in the most unconventional ways. News from Tavarua: Extra Point Brings Dinner and Music

In November, residents attended our monthly Extra Point event where families from the surrounding community came to Tavarua Senior Apartments in Carlsbad, CA, and served a free dinner to the residents.  This month, in a very special addition to the dinner, Extra Point invited the Team Violin-Team Cello group, composed of local elementary school children under ten years old, to play holiday music. Residents really enjoyed the young musicians and the music certainly got everyone in a festive spirit.

The Extra Point youth volunteer group was founded by Becky Vermillion, a member of the Board of Directors for Carlsbad Youth Baseball, specifically to benefit the residents of Tavarua Senior Apartments on a monthly basis. Becky started the group to teach young athletes how to serve their community off the field. This collaboration is part of EngAGE’s intergenerational programming funded by The Eisner Foundation.

EngAGE connects across generations, helping older adults become involved with younger people in their communities as mentors, sages, and neighbors.
