George Segal with Experience Talks Host John Semper Jr. at the 50th anniversary screening of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at the Laemmle Royal Theater.
Fifty years ago, one of the most provocative films in cinema history was released: WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (1966). The film adaptation of playwright Edward Albee’s scathing dissection of a marriage was brought to the screen with most of its graphic dialogue intact due to the relaxation of the censorious Production Code in its fading, final gasp. VIRGINIA WOOLF garnered a near-record 13 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director for Mike Nichols, and five Oscar wins including Elizabeth Taylor (Best Actress) and Sandy Dennis (Supporting Actress). The rest of the four character cast were also nominated: Richard Burton (Best Actor) and GEORGE SEGAL (Supporting Actor). Segal appeared recently at a special, one night only screening at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West L.A. where he was interviewed by Stephen Farber.
The screening was also presented as a tribute to cinematographer Haskell Wexler, who died in late 2015 at the age of 93. Wexler won his first Oscar for filming VIRGINIA WOOLF; it was also the final Oscar ever awarded for the category of Best Cinematography (Black & White).
