One 62-Year-Old Woman’s Story of Working in L.A.

Work ZoneL.A. Times columnist Steve Lopez tells the story of Cathy Youngblood, 62:

“Cathy Youngblood has two degrees, one in anthropology. She’s now a hotel housekeeper, making the same per hour as she did three decades ago. . . . But after working her way through school as a custodian, the housekeeping job was the best she could find. Not that Youngblood is complaining. She’s able to pay her bills, and her daily experience, she says, is like a post-grad education.”

Although Steve Lopez says that the story “tells you something about the local economy,” it also tells you something about the challenges an older person faces in the working world. Read the column here.
